Puppy love,  Levy group will put 50 canines up for adoption
A weeklong operation wrapped up in Levy County on Monday with 52 mug shots taken. No crime wave prompted the surge in photography, just a lot of waggingving tails.

The mug shots, for identification purposes, were of the 52 small dogs and puppies that a Chiefland woman voluntarily relinquished after health and code enforcement officials realized last week that she was sheltering more animals than she was capable of caring for.

After undergoing health checks Monday, the dogs will be available for adoption.

Levy County Animal Services is working on the adoptions with Friends and Pets Forever, the nonprofit organization in Levy County that is in the process of becoming a humane society.

‘‘This worked the way it was supposed to,’’ said Don May, environmental health director for Levy County.

May worked with Bill Hammond, the Chiefland building and zoning administrator, and Mike Schenk, a Levy County animal services officer, to arrange for the animals to be removed from the woman’s property and put up for adoption.

‘‘It’s not too often that we see something on the magnitude of this,’’ Hammond said. ‘‘Sometimes we have a retiree who has two or three animals they cannot afford to feed any longer, but this was a much bigger case. And, this was a situation where the animals were all still pretty healthy, instead of much later when many may have had to be euthanized.’’

Schenk said the dogs and puppies were small, mixed breeds, with the physical characteristics of terriers, dachshunds and Chihuahuas.

The dogs are being held temporarily at a private residence. As the dogs and puppies were being identified and examined Monday afternoon, they also were receiving some love.

Seventh-graders Kelsey Byrne and Kristen Ingram from Blessed Trinity Catholic School in Ocala spent their day off for Presidents Day cradling frightened puppies and speaking softly to them. Friends and Pets Forever volunteers Tonya Hunt and Jody Heflin gently stroked each adult dog until it was calm enough to be photographed.

Volunteers from the Bronson Home and Community Educators, Schenk’s wife, Sylvia Schenk, and Aneta Zinetti spoke reassuringly to each dog and puppy as they were weighed, fed and watered. ‘‘We would really like people to be able to adopt some of these animals,’’ Mike Schenk said.

Editor:

As President of the Humane Society of Levy County, Inc., I would like to thank all the members who continue to support our mission. I would like to express my deepest thanks to the rescues that have networked with us to rescue the adoptable animals that pass through our local shelter.

I wish to thank David Weatherford, Assistant Director of Levy County Animal Services and his staff who have bent over backward to work with us to reduce the number of animals that we have had to say Good-Bye to in the past year.

During the past year we have participated in different functions throughout Levy County. Those being the Jack Russell Mania in Williston (April & November), Chiefland Watermelon Festival, Horseman Park Rodeo events, Bronson Speedway events, Christmas Lights at Roger Kunde's home Chiefland, K.A.R.E. ( Katrina Animal Rescue Effort ) and our Membership Drives in Bronson Williston, and Chiefland, Christmas Party Adoption Event at Earth Pets in Gainesville.

In September we applied for our Tax Exempt Status (which is back logged to date.) There is a great need for this status as for which we will be able to apply for grants for Spay and Neuter and Corporate Donations.

HSLC continues to look for property which is zoned for a veterinarian practice for which to build a facility. Some have asked why Bronson? Well as president I would like to have a facility which I am close to for the well being of our pets. The objective of the facility will be for Spay & Neutering and a place for us to showcase our rescued adoptable animals. We are trying to work toward a Low Cost Spay/Neuter for residents of Levy County.

Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. has a Emergency Preparedness Trailer (45 ft. ) that is being outfitted with portable cages, cabinets, food, medical supplies, towels and blankets for Emergency Disaster Support. The trailer can be moved to Emergency Pet Sheltering Facility for support. We look forward to assisting Levy County Animal Services during a Disaster Preparedness situation.

I want to express my deepest thanks to those that have opened their homes to foster our rescued companions and those that have helped to transport to our partnered rescues.
I need to challenge all members to go out and rally for more members to further strengthen our goals, which will be the next hard step for us to take in getting a facility and setting up our own spay and neuter clinic here in Levy County. If you would like to become a member please call or write for an application.

Upcoming Events -- April 1 & 2 Jack Russell Trails, Williston Horseman Park, May- TBA Adoption Event, June 3rd Chiefland Watermelon Festival.

BOCC forms committee to search for Humane Society land
By Claude Lewis

BRONSON - The Levy County Commissioners listened with sympathetic ears as Michelle Hagan and Toni Collins spoke on behalf of the Humane Society of Levy County's needs for land for a permanent home.

They were impressed by their presentation at Tuesday's meeting at the County Courthouse and nodded in agreement that the Human Society's services are a blessing to the county.

The commissioners concurred that leasing land to the Humane Society for a spay/neuter clinic would be a noble thing to do.

But all were not on the same page as far as which plot of land to lease to the HSLC.

Hence, the four commissioners present approved creating a committee to explore options and search for land that best fits the needs of everyone involved.

The issue will be revisited at the second meeting of August.

The Humane Society of Levy County came into Tuesday's meeting with the intentions of securing a 5-acre plot of land owned by the county on CR 335 east of Bronson - near the county landfill.

The fledgling Humane Society's temporary base for the past two years has been at the Bronson home of its president, Mike Schenk.

Collins said that the targeted lot off CR 335 was also close to the County Animal Shelter, which has worked hand-in-hand with the Humane Society in animal rescues the past few years.

While that made lots of sense to committee woman Nancy Bell, chair Sammy Yearty was looking at a bigger picture.

“I'm willing to support them (Humane Society), but I have concerns about the particular site,” he said. “I've done some research on the landfill property. There will be an increase of debris with growth. We need space for storm debris and material.”

Tony Parker of District 1 pointed out that the landfill is already a busy area.

Yearty and Parker think perhaps a more sedentary site might be better suited for the Humane Society.

Schenk said that 5 acres would be an ideal size to service the county's animals. A 40-by-60 foot steel building is tentatively planned. This would serve as animal hospital and housing for pets up for adoption. They would need room to exercise and walk animals plus room for parking.

The Humane Society is currently raising money for its building through bikers for pets rallies, family concerts and bake sales. A more extensive fund-raising effort will seek out grants and donations from the private and commercial sectors.

Schenk said he has no exact time frame, but that he would love to see the project come to fruition in two years or less.

“I'd like to see us work with this group,” said Bell from District 2. “I'm 100 percent in favor of forming a committee to help find a site.”

The commissioners welcomed Humane Society members to be a part of the committee.

Michelle Hagan, the Levy Humane Society's Director of Education, started off the meeting by giving some background of what the society has accomplished and what it is willing to do in the future.

She said the Humane Society has arranged Animal Services to receive food and cat litter from Pets in Distress, an Ocala based organization. That has allowed Animal Services to free up money for things like bowls, fans and educational materials.

“We educate the people of Levy County on where to find their lost pets, adopt a new family member and change the mind set that shelter kills everything that enters the facility,” she said.

Hagan said that while 472 animals were adopted from 2002-04, the number has climbed to 807 from 2005 to present.

“As the human population of Levy County grows, so will the animal populations,” said Collins, who is also on the County Planning and Zoning Board. “Unwanted and stray animals place a huge financial burden on the county government's pocketbook.”

“Our own building is the perfect answer,” Schenk said.

Dear Residents of Levy and surrounding Counties

You may not be aware of the fact that Levy County Animal Services, and The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. is growing at a rather rapid rate. There is an over population in our county of homeless dogs and cats who need a loving home. Levy County Animal Services has agreed to allow The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. to hold adoption events at the Levy County Animal Services Shelter. This partnership provides the pets at the shelter the opportunity to be adopted, two Saturdays per month. The Humane Society offers pets who are previously spayed/neutered, heartworm free, current on vaccines, micro-chipped, and on flea and heartworm prevention. The spaying or neutering and rabies vaccine has not previously been done to the pets at the shelter, but are included in the adoption costs. Either way that you choose to save a life, there will be someone there to help you with your decision and to explain the process to you.

The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. will hold the adoption events from noon until 4 p.m, two Saturdays per month, at The Levy County Animal Services Shelter out at the Levy County Landfill. The address for at Animal Services is 12055 NE. 69th Lane, Bronson, FL 32621. Contact numbers are 352-486-5138 at Animal Service and 352-486-5705 for the Humane Society of Levy County.

The Humane Society of Levy County, Inc. would like to also promote the Low Cost Vaccine Clinic that is held at The Levy County Animal Services Shelter. It is a Florida State Law that all dogs, cats, and ferrets be current on their rabies vaccine. A rabies vaccine is valid in the State of Florida only if it is given by a Licensed Veterinarian. Protect you and your pet by making sure that they are current on their vaccines.

The adoption event for the month of July will be held this Saturday July, 21st from noon until 4 p.m. The Low Cost Vaccine Clinic will be held same place, same day, from 3:00 pm until 4:00 pm. Thank You for your support and we look forward to seeing you at the Shelter!

Signed,

Mike Schenk

The Humane Society will have available for adoption animals that have been previously spayed or neutered, are heartworm-free, have current vaccines and an implanted microchip and have been started on flea and heartworm prevention programs. Also on Saturday, a low-cost rabies vaccination will be held at the county shelter from 3 to 4 p.m.
